As shown in the figure below, a typical battery energy storage system is comprised of a number of components. More or less of these components will be required, depending on the needs of the application.
The Battery Management System (BMS) monitors the battery pack status and can report to a host system or graphical user interface. The BMS can also control the charger to optimize the charging of the cells or communication with an output power converter, or protection switch, to condition the battery output as required. The output power converter may convert the unregulated battery DC output to a regulated DC voltage of another value or even convert the battery output to AC. More detail on the individual components is provided in the subsequent sections.
